This tradition in Russia is annually celebrated on the night of July 6-7 and symbolizes the worship of nature, the sun, herbs and water. A cheerful folk holiday is closely intertwined with pagan rituals and beliefs. Since ancient times, it has been customary to kindle fires, swim in the river, collect herbs and weave wreaths. Fortune-telling at night has special magic. On the night of Ivan Kupala, unmarried girls wove wreaths of wildflowers, herbs and divined for love. A lighted candle was placed in the middle of the wreath and let it flow through the water, if the wreath went to the bottom, then the beloved fell out of love with the girl. If the wreath adhered to the shore, then this year there will be no wedding, and if the wreath floated far away with an unextinguished candle, the girl will meet her betrothed and a happy future awaits her.
