I've always been fascinated with the Victorian era...one reason is because there is a rather grotesque, macabre side to it. For instance, some of the dolls look downright creepy (to our sensibilities anyway). In addition, I remember seeing some Victorian ladies hats at an old homestead here with live hummingbirds, and thought it was such a strange and macabre, yet sort of beautiful juxtaposition. Hence the inspiration for this ink and watercolour portrait of a fictional Victorian doll, but sort of given the horror treatment. Birds, mice and even snakes adorn her head, while black eyes stare from a cracked face. I hope viewers will be impacted by the horrific yet beautiful image.
