Domestic Lioness (3) Painting

The third part of the series 'Domestic lioness' was inspired by a family in Poland who had a fully grown African lioness as a family pet. Having reassured a local film crew that it was perfectly safe ('Its never bitten anyone....yet') it proceeded to try to eat the interviewer. Luckily he wasn't too badly hurt and said afterwards that as he lay in the fireplace with the enormous man eating cat sinking it's teeth into his back he thought 'I knew this would happen' The painting asks many questions about us- how quickly and easily we abandon our basic survival instincts and enter a room with a deadly animal? It would seem rude not to? Painted at Sheffield Hallam university whilst the artist was studying for his Masters degree. The painting has an extraordinary 'floating' surface due to the use of an airbrush to construct the primary elements of the image- its as if the image hovers just above or just below the surface.
