About The Artwork

This painting is about the constant attack on women’s right to choose. I truly don’t think I have ever been so angry, so upset. The rage of feeling less than just because I am a woman. That I don’t have full control over my body. I didn’t feel like a human being; I felt like cattle. For this painting, I chose the “ugliest” colors I could: neon yellow, bright red and neon green, blood red and “baby vomit” green. I was tired of always having to be pretty, to be palatable. The colors and contrast are so bright that it actually hurts your eyes to stare at the painting for a long time.

My paintings explore the human condition and the array of confusing emotions and experiences that we encounter in this life. Love, loss, and longing are some of the main themes of my work. I paint intuitively and the work becomes a direct reflection of my own feelings and emotions at the time of creation. The paintings tap into my unconscious and subconscious mind as I let the color, mark making and composition flow freely. The juxtaposition and accumulation of advancing and receding positive and negative expressive brushwork form an abstracted landscape: a sense of place, a moment in time. The landscape becomes a metaphor–a mental space that draws the viewer in and lets them find their own solace in the work. Color and paint are used expressively to create a multitude of hues that overlap and build to create spatial relationships. These colors are an intuitive combination of chromic neutrals and highly saturated hues. The thickness and thinness of the paint application creates spatial depthness and flatness. With lyrical titles, the paintings become visual poetry. The artwork has its own language and rhythm that mirrors that of a poem. Pauses, repetition, and pacing, used with color and value instead of words, creates a depiction of an intense emotional moment, whether it be positive or negative. With the conglomeration of these artistic practices and decisions, I create paintings that reflect the dichotomy between the intrinsic and extrinsic situations that make up what it means to be alive.
