About The Artwork

1655/5000 I am working on a new series, "Down under". Only when the series is ready, I will offer it for sale. I would already like to introduce you to my new work. This, and all other works in the coming weeks, are for me the preparation for a series of oil paintings that I will paint in my new studio after our move. They will all be nudes in which I try to paint the bodies in a less common perspective and where a face, or part of a face, will always be in the picture. I am now in preparation and looking for visual material, or make photo visual material that I want to work with. The most important of the works for me is that the painted person is not exhibited (which you of course often see on social media, Grindr, Flickr) but where they are caught in a moment of ... inattention ... innocence? I also set myself the goal of displaying the genitals (dick, ass, balls) and the faces in a way that distorts it all. So not the calibrated butts and cocks but ... forms that are distorted. It is still difficult to explain exactly what I want. Erotic paintings that transcend eroticism? Sex that is not sex? I can't explain it yet, but it's in my head. A big challenge to translate my thoughts ... and to get that on canvas, I can tell you. The photos are not always as good, just like the descriptions and catchwords but ... does that matter? I let you share in my work process, that's what it's about! Whether it's John or Peter ... what difference does it make?

Welcome to the vibrant world of Paul Harmsen, a versatile Dutch artist who paints, creates captivating videos, and designs unique artwear, gaywear, menswear. Born in Doetinchem, Netherlands, Paul's artistic journey took a transformative turn when he transitioned from a successful hairdressing career to pursue his passion at the Gerrit Rietveld art academy in Amsterdam. With a background in costume design for television and theater, Paul's artistic spirit was temporarily overshadowed. Operating an art studio/gallery alongside a bed and breakfast, his work organically found its way into the hearts and homes of admirers. In 2018, Paul and his husband moved to Aix en Provence, and despite facing the challenges of the Covid era, Paul embraced new artistic endeavors. His relocation to Spain in 2002, marked the inception of "Paulsartworld," a pioneering fashion company specializing in menswear adorned with prints inspired by his eclectic artworks. As a self-proclaimed maverick, Paul refuses to be confined to a specific style or category, making it a challenge to label his work as purely art, kitsch, or fashion. Embracing diversity in materials and techniques, Paul creates a harmonious fusion of painting, drawing, modeling, sewing, and more.
