About The Artwork
The dragonfly - elegant and enchanting she dances with the wind. Her dazzling, delicate wings seem magical, just like from another world. For the Celts she is a "flying dragon" and in Asia she stands for vitality, courage and happiness. For me she embodies a free spirit full of grace and independence. "Dragonfly - Dance on the Volcano" consists of several layers of material. Resin and pigmented wax on canvas - fused with broken shellac, also pigmented, and coloured with oil pastel chalk. The details of the dragonflies are pigmented wax applied with a kind of hot nib. It is framed in a matt black glazed wooden floater frame - ready to hang. The meaning behind my pictures are not necessarily related to the object, the pattern or the object being depicted, but to the feeling it triggers in the viewer. To dive into a kind of flow with the picture in order to create awareness of the moment would be a wonderful purpose of my paintings. There is always something new to discover or to have a different effect on oneself - to find peace or new energy. The most important thing is to be or become a free spirit.

Ulli Dorau lives and works in Baden-Wuerttemberg, Germany close to the Black Forest. Already during her school days, she enjoyed a children's drawing circle in the castle of her home town. Even though she studied law after school, creativity has always played an important role in her life. Ulli Dorau has developed her own distinctive encaustic mixed media technique over the years using damar blended pigmented beeswax, shellac, oil paints and alcohol inks. Her artworks speak their own language: inspired by nature - created with heart, fire and soul - driven by a free spirit. Ulli Dorau: "As an encaustic artist I love the natural materials this millennia-old technique provides. Many layers of pigmented wax on wood fused together – translucent or opaque. Burned shellac creating delicate effects. The meaning behind the image is not necessarily related to the subject or object depicted, but to the feeling it evokes in the viewer.
