Cihangir Gümüstürkmen examines the underlying meaning of famous works of art, e.g. from the Renaissance, and his own foto collages with a light touch thus revealing his own world view. In his current work the artist uses fotos from different eras in his foto collages which are then painted in oil and acrylic on canvas.

Born in the Turkish city of Izmir in 1964, Cihangir Gümüstürkmen has lived in Berlin (Germany) since 1977. He creates works in various fields, such as painting, sculpture, ceramics, collage and video. Cihangir is also a performance artist. The art works of the artist Cihangir Gümüştürkmen, born in Izmir, resident of Berlin since 1977, consist of a variety of different works from paintings and sculptures to photo, video and performance pieces. Whether in his vibrantly coloured collages, reminiscent of Pop Art, his traditional mirror images , or in his latest works, hyperrealist oil-paintings, Gümüştürkmen expresses himself freely across all artistic periods and disciplines. Not only as an artist, but also as a performer Cihangir Gümüştürkmen maneuvers elegantly between the cultures that have impacted his life. Using motifs Gümüştürkmen combines memories of his childhood and cultural background with his life today. This creates enthralling and surreal imagery, that breaks multiple conventions, posing critical questions. Cihangir Gümüştürkmen plays with traditional ways of seeing things and calls, for example, current gender norms into question. Central to all of his works is a permanent and often ironic self-reflection. Author: Friedericke Kröbel
