Looking at a blank canvas can be quite daunting for any artist, but not for this work. I recall organizing the canvas, white gesso, sand, half a dozen vibrant Golden Heavy Body acrylics, a few palette knives and brushes, thinking, ‘okay, I want to make some vibrant colours first.’ As I played with various mixes and shapes, this creation was birthed literally from my imagination straight onto the canvas. I can not recall how long it took me to complete. I remember either waiting for the think layers of gesso/paint to dry or frantically etching patterns with palette knife before they dried. This artwork opened a portal into the past whilst also giving me a passion strong enough to help overcome ongoing health and life obstacles. I understand who I am as Maori, my peoples origins, our recent and ancient history. Art provides me with the enthusiasm to endure pain, overcome obstacles and plan for a better future. It provides the light, shade, color and dimensions I need to live as opposed to just merely surviving. To ‘live without art’ is a thought I prefer not to entertain. Now in a private collection, limited edition prints will be available once I obtain a higher quality image. SPECIAL NOTE: Being one of my early works I signed it using my English Christain Name and Marriage Surname. It is one of only a few I signed this way. I am Tepora Watene, indigenous to my home/tangata whenua, Aotearoa (New Zealand), yet composing of all my preceding tupuna (ancestors); Rarotonga, Easter Island, Hawaii, Tahiti, Peru, America, The British Isles, Egypt, Phonecia, Israel, Earth, The Universe. Kia ora/Shalom.

New Zealand
I started practicing fine art in 2004.The first art gallery owner I showed my art to said; 'tell me, you are Maori, yet your art is Egyptian?' Since then I have learned much about my Maori and ancient ancestry, Maori Culture and Art. My first solo exhibition filmed by Maori TV New Zealand titled, "The Forsaken" portrayed the symbols and hieroglyphs used by Legend Carriers (Scribes) to record events and history. As a 21st century scribe I use archetypal expressionism, hieroglyphs, petro glyphs, symbols, with traditional fine art methods to retell the legends of my people (iwi), family (whanau) and scenes from around my country (tangata whenua). I am also a writer researching the history of my people back to 4,000 BC for a book and film. CURRENT PROJECTS 1.Illustration and writing of children's series of books titled 'The Legend of Pirongia Mountain'. 2. Series of visual Documentaries. 3. 2 x Commissions. 4. Artworks for 3 separate art exhibitions 'retelling' the history of my tribes, family, ancestors, culture, people and country. INFLUENCES: Ancient art, Maori Art, Constantin Severin; Founder of the Global Art Movement of Archetypal Expressionism, Salvador Dali, Jackson Pollock, Monet, Cezanne, and Frida Kahlo. MEDIA: Paint, sketch, mixed media. REGION: Mt Pirongia/Te Pahu, Waikato, North Island, New Zealand. COMMISSIONS: Yes BIOGRAPHY: I am a 52nd generation Maori New Zealander and direct descendant to my tribe's paramount chief; Matene Te Nga. I began exhibiting and selling my art in 2005. I work from 'Toi Toi Studios and Productions Nz' located in the foothills of Mt Pirongia, overlooking the Waikato. https://www.facebook.com/TeporaWateneVisualArtist http://nz.linkedin.com/pub/tepora-watene/87/179/769/ http://toitoistudios.blogspot.co.nz/
