ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This painting was produced using bio particulate based paint in association with philosopher chemist, John Bennett, founder of Eco Safety Products..The paint is mixed with rain water, seawater and other natural materials and bio-particulates. The painting is created out-of-doors in a field by the sea. Paint mixed with rainwater is poured onto the surface of the canvas. The next step is to flip the freshly paint-covered canvas face down onto the ground. After some time (days, weeks, months) the canvas is flipped over again and allowed to dry in the sun. The face of the painting is then exposed to the weather including ran, snow, sun and sleet. The imprint of the ground is captured on the canvas. In this piece it was the field of grass at the outdoor studio. This process is repeated to create layers until the desired natural effect is achieved. No paintbrushes are used in the making of these paintings. This painting is made by harnessing the elements and the power of Nature. Inevitably the painting is stunning because of the natural effects. The delicacy of this painting cannot be seen in a photograph. The painting holds a natural beauty.

Carbee Marshall Carbee studied at Pratt Institute in New York and in Paris with Daniel Milhaud, Carbee received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of New Hampshire. His studies resulted in the formulation of his own curricular innovation, a degree awarded in the discipline of drawing. Carbee has since been producing a prolific and diverse oeuvre that has exhibited internationally in New York, Paris, Los Angeles, St. Petersburg, Moscow and Tokyo. His works grace distinguished collections around the world of patrons from Bob Dylan to First Lady, Laura Bush. His body of work extends beyond the canvas and 3 dimensional realm of fine art to film and video production and set design. Carbee’s multimedia projects include music video and movie collaborations with Robert Altman, Steven Spielberg, Woody Allen, Julian Schnabel, Ang Lee and others. Credited in films such as Men in Black, Eraser, Basquiat and Donnie Brasco, to name a few, he has also contributed to music video projects for Michael Jackson, the Rolling Stones, Elvis Costello and Barbara Streisand. 2004 marked yet another seismic shift in Carbee’s output, as over 150 works were exhibited at Tufts University and his Bio-Crystalline art installation, “Minor to Major D.C.” was created for the White House – which later became part of Mrs. Bush’s permanent collection. The latter exhibition launched Carbee’s concern with harnessing natural forces and earthly, indigenous elements, harkening back to the days of prehistoric hunters, who recorded these elements for mystical purposes. In 2008, he engineered a zero VOC soy-based gesso for artists and continues to develop environmental processes. Presently working exclusively with natural, non-petroleum based materials, gemstones and rainwater, Carbee is delivering a markedly unique, and transforming energetic through these materials. With many periods and shifts in style, Carbee’s oeuvre bears the mark of a great artist who restlessly responds to the changing world around him. Currently residing between Paris, New York and Ocho Rios, his mobility maintains his keen awareness. NEW YORK, NY: Currently working in Jamaica, West Indies; in the Blue Mountains and on the beaches of St. Ann and St. Mary. I usher a micro geological event on the canvas outdoors. I use the power of nature to create art. The vocabulary of my process is the same as in geology; precipitation, erosion, sedimentation, evaporation, accretion.
