EXIT ONLY Painting

This watercolor is framed with a 3" mat. "EXIT ONLY" is one of the first in my "Underground" series of NYC subway images, done in a non-traditional watercolor technique on Arches archival 100% cotton rag. I wanted to paint urban landscape, but something more unusual than buildings and bridges. Then I realized: What is more New York than the subway? In the Underground series I try to simplify station architecture into ragged shapes of light and dark. "Exit Only" is one of the few to include the sunlight at the top of the stairs.
