About The Artwork

Inspired by the local area to my art studio - Crosby Beach. The weather in North West of the Uk is highly changeable and stormy days are interesting beasts to be caught up in. This painting is the result of sketches in ink and oil pastel. Having trained as a textile artist, my canvas work begins with collage using indian and found papers, often torn to make interesting shapes and edges. This is followed by sculpting low relief surfaces with putty, sand and glass beads. Found objects can be printed into damp surfaces. Inks are then applied to the gesso surface, which blend in the landscape pools and pits. Bleach and salt provide more interesting marks and textures. Finally acrylic paints, oil pastels and metallic foil highlights are applied to bring detail. Each piece is worked on a little each day over many weeks due to dry time needed between each layer of media.

Despite always having a passion for art, the decision to quit my career and become a full time artist was still a scary one. Two years later, I have no regrets and could not imagine doing anything else in life. I'm an artist working across painted mixed media and textile art. My work explores contrasts of colour and surface in distinctive ways. Vibrant and tactile, I aim to present the ordinary as extraordinary. Liverpool, the thriving city I live in presents a rich source of inspiration: the industrial dock warehouses, geometry of architecture set against a backdrop of changeable coastline. Since embarking on this adventure, I have had the opportunity to teach, attend arts fairs, begin exhibiting and have completed several large scale commissions.
