Anyone else finding their spirit pummeled by the relentless, pervasive onslaught of superficiality, lack of authenticity, banality and emptiness of contemporary culture? I thought as much! I really wanted... actually NEEDED... to do something very pure and truthful to counteract this sense of barrenness. I needed to create an antidote for nothingness. I needed something alive! Something to nourish the soul. You know, the thing that art is SUPPOSED to do! Fortunately, I had the good luck to meet this fascinating Romanian woman, Amalia, in the south of France. A very smart, very humble person... she just radiated authenticity, decency and a very genuine, honest kind of beauty. But Amalia has a certain gravitas to her, too. An earthiness and strength that only comes as the result of real life experience and perseverance... all of the joy and heartbreak, triumphs and disappointments that define each of our lives. And she carried it all with grace, dignity, humility, charm and a delightful, insightful humour. Very much that essence of humanity and the human spirit. Amalia's particular charisma is how she effortlessly embodies and conveys these deeply human, universal qualities simply by being herself. That's what these paintings are about. They are not portraits of a single person in that sense; but rather they are a means of catching and transmitting those mercurial qualities of being which transcend any one person. They connect us to something in all of us. Something we instinctively recognize. Something good. And who isn't ready for a bit of that in their lives these days?

Michael Harris is an oil painter, song writer and world traveller from Toronto Canada. He is self taught, having never sought out formal training in art. Following a brief stint studying graphic design at college, Michael turned to travel for inspiration and adventure. Several months of immersion in the galleries and culture of Europe at 19 was followed by a year of travel in Australia at 21. At 24, to mark his transition to the ranks of professional artist, Michael took his paints and palette on a year long trip around the world - painting his way through Hong Kong, Thailand, Australia, Nepal, India, Greece, Turkey and the UK. Between trips he honed his skills as a working artist, doing everything from reproductions for an international art company and illustration to portraiture, murals and other private commissions. Michael has spent years developing his approach to painting in oils. The focus of his current work is his enigmatic and provocative figure paintings which include his sepia and silver series and his series of multiple climbing and flowing figures. Michael's work is influenced by his interest in psychology, media, consciousness studies, politics and the Integral Philosophy of Ken Wilber.
