About The Artwork

A mysterious transmission from the late Middle Ages twines around the emergence of the Red Monks. Once upon a time, at an old mill located in a deep valley surrounded by the forests, a young miller's daughter was unable to fall asleep. The little girl decided to take a short walk that night. Near the house she saw the shadows of people who appeared to be very busy. They were monks who wore purple robes and were in an obvious hurry. Quietly they disappeared one by one into a small barn. Curiously the girl took a look through the keyhole. In the flickering light of candles she saw the red monks empty their pockets. Countless golden coins came to light and under their robes the monks had hidden even more treasures. The girl knocked on the door, but this startled the monks and the hole magical scene disappeared and vanished from her sight. The next morning the girl told her father of her experience. They looked in the barn but all they found were some used candles. The red monks were never to be seen again, and neither was the gold. Taking inspiration from this fary tale Boerger produced his four "Red Monks" to mark the 500th anniversary of this tale. The colours of red and gold shimmer abstractly as if in the darkness of the night and let one's imagination run wild. In the fairytale the girl knocking on the door broke the spell and her dream world vanished. With this "knocking" in mind, the landings on the Red Monks came to be.

Dr. Heiner Boerger – Artist and Pilot, born in 1960 in Duisburg, Germany. His education in the field of communication and design at the Hochschule der Kuenste (Academy of Arts) in Berlin (amongst others with Prof. Wolfgang Krebs) was completed in 1986. At this time only the western part of Berlin was free and lay like an island in the midst of the communist ruled GDR. Heiner Boerger was inspired by the artistic and liberal environment of West-Berlin. He was present in Berlin on November 9th 1989 and experienced first-hand the falling of the wall and the start of a new era of liberty and freedom for all Germans. After his dissertation under Prof. Posner-Landsch, Boerger founded an event agency in Frankfurt, Germany. Here he used his creative talent to work as a producer and director of live performances, film productions and music productions. In 1999 he successfully completed the training required to become a helicopter pilot. In early 2004 after several years of flying, Boerger fulfilled his greatest dream: he received the inspiration to build bridges and combine art with flying. Influenced by the universal approach of Renaissance and inspired by modern performance artists such as Pollock or Christo he began to create a new and unique form of art: "HELI-ART". In so doing the artist creates spectacular work using a helicopter at symbolic locations around the globe.
