About The Artwork

My feeling can perhaps be described by the experience of seeing a picture in a New York Times article of Ellsworth Kelly in his studio. On the wall, behind him, were all of these marks and swatches of color-- obviously, test spots for him. There also were lines and all kinds of marks on the wall -- a really complex, and to me, interesting, wall. CM: (laughing)I think you're absolutely reading into the photograph of Kelly your own painting preferences. It's quite likely that, he did try the swatches of color out then sought order in his own work out of that chaotic mess on the wall. JP: I would love to have gotten into his head when he saw the article in the New York Times, what his reaction was, in his own mind. I'd be curious about that, because here you have the consummate minimalist painter, standing in his studio, in front of this incredibly expressive wall. So, what did he think of that? I wonder. I'd love to know. I have my own interpretation, though.
