About The Artwork

This portrait depicts a young woman with red hair who looks directly at the viewer. She is surrounded by exposed roots and a hornet's nest that seem to be acting as her dress or protective armor. Hornets are hovering around her, lichen is growing on her hair and skin, and a corn snake is entwined in the roots and nest covering her. There is a single feather on her shoulder, which suggests that her chances of flight are non-existent. She must instead surrender to the weight of her responsibilities as a mother and a woman, the rapid passage of time, and her own mortality.

Emily Flint earned a BFA in Photography from the Savannah College of Art and Design and a BFA in Art Education from the Virginia Commonwealth University. After a brief career teaching art in Richmond Public Schools, she decided to pursue painting. Flint began showing her work in the spring of 2013, and was a recipient of the Best in Show Award at the 2013 Lynchburg Art Festival. She recently returned to the Lynchburg area to live and work in a little cabin on the James River with her bluetick hound, Simon. Obsessive rendering of nature's micro details bring rich symbolism to life in her psychologically disturbing depictions of women in nature. Within her work, Flint deals with fears, the passage of time and loss of youth, physical beauty, and fertility. She is inspired by the natural life that thrives along the James River and Blue Ridge Mountains. www.emilyflint.com www.simonsspots.com
