Emergence in Fire Painting

This is a "full blood" painting--meaning I painted it without any sketching or planning ahead. I chose watercolor because I like its unpredictable quality wet-on-wet, but its rather predictable quality wet-on-dry. I also like that the painting can change as you go. Improvising in (at least some) of my painting is imperative to me as an artist. It's one of the chief reasons I enjoy the abstract style so much. The more skills I learn, however, the more I realize that, like playing jazz, improvising isn't just what you do in the moment, but how you've prepared to that moment.
