About The Artwork

"Emergence" is a piece that felt very intuitive to me in its creation process. If the piece were to be described in one word, it would be contrast. The bottom of the canvas is a very light yellow, and the top portion of the canvas is a dynamic black cluster of visceral line. This darker portion's movement brings to mind a storm, while the lighter portion is more subdued and serene. Additionally, there are collaged textured elements similar to bubble wrap that have been layered with paints. These textured elements leave the viewer engaged in a more 3D way. For some time, I have been incorporating thick and perhaps also unique textures, such as pastes, fabrics and even bubble wrap into my paintings. Lastly, as on a conceptual level, this piece's theme of contrast also carries through. "Emergence" is a visual metaphor of life's light and shadow, day and night, and yin and yang.

After earning a Bachelor of Individualized Studies in Art, Holistic Health, and Religious Studies at the University of Minnesota, Cohen studied traditional oil painting. and mixed media techniques at the Milan Art Institute. It was there that her style as an abstract expressionist emerged. Today Cohen’s work explores emotional nuance through the use of vibrant colors and textures. Her work is visceral, fast-paced, and intuitive, leveraging tools such as spray paint, collage, mirror, fabric, acrylic inks, and oil paint. She considers her creative process a storm of inspiration that might strike at any moment - moving quickly before passing upon completion of each piece. “My work is intuitive,” says Cohen “Painting for me is both a release of the old and a process of regeneration where I feel very connected and alive.” Based in the heart of Minneapolis, Cohen’s studio is five minutes from the Mississippi river, where she often sits and writes about themes for her upcoming pieces. The sun moving through the water - an element Cohen has incorporated in much of her work - is one of her top inspirations. Cohen is in the beginning stages of creating an art book of her work.
