Espinosa Rising 24x36 Oil on Canvas Inspired by the book "Esperanza Rising” a novel that impacted me in my youth. ” Esperanza Rising" is a historical fiction based on a young Mexican girl overcoming adversity. This self-portrait, although stoic in gaze shows the face of perseverance despite difficulties. I wanted it to feel romantic with heavy influences of colonial Spanish garments against the amber lit fields of old Florida. The atmosphere seems to wrap her intentionally because she is in a sense part of her environment yet attacked by it. I added a surreal touch to represent adversity. The tiny ribs are a metaphor of having frail painful bones due to my chronic illness a particular spot that hurts the most. The catholic sacred heart unlit represents my choice to stir away from the religions forced on by colonialism. A rather heavy and uncomfortable garment that I carry on my colorful body of blue, yellow, and reddish hues. For the title I replaced the "Esperanza" with "Espinosa", an old family surname meaning thorn.
