This I painted after being interviewed by a friend (fellow artiest) about my work. We spoke for over an hour but stil I felt a lack of words, so I answered her by making this painting. So, it's about mening in general, that thing art (or life) is about, here depicted as a small child or the essence of a person. He/she's not actually born yet, it just began to incarnate. To be born is actually a leap of faith (once born, you'll be a helpless wurm with an still cosmic and undivided consciousness, totally dependent on the one who's gonna take care of you). I saw that even a newborn baby actually is individual, with their own essence. But they're not children yet... they're more like a hundred-year-old ET, tunneled from some outer space into our world. This essence (we all have it, buried deep inside of us) is immortal, even when on this painting it's not really alive yet either. Some people find this painting a little scary, others find it a comforting piece and good for people who suffer from depression. It's about that thing inside of is which is stronger than neglect, bad care, fear and denial. The painting itself is oil on canvas. It was hung before a backdrop of unstretched canvas, painted with earth and caseïne (mud-glue). The size mentioned below is without the backdrop.

I'm a painter, somewhere between photography and oil paint, between classical painting and abstract expressionism. Part of my work is conceptual. I studied at the AKI Enschede, mixed media (Netherlands) and the Rijksacadamy in Amsterdam (postgrad, painting). Later I did some more research (classical painting, color theory, optics). I want to find out how perception works and how we construct it out of a sense for meaning. Light and darkness is my main theme, also how that used to work in the darkroom. Analogue photography printing reminded me of memory and how memories are re-creations of the initial experience. I admire Andrej Tarkovsky, his work, attitude and words.
