Theme & Composition: This painting captures the mood of walking through a dense urban area, filled with the bustle of traffic as well as the stolen moments of relaxation people snatch at a cafe. The setting sun and the long shadows it creates give the scene its dreamy vibe, adding a sense of magic to what would otherwise be a normal snapshot of a city. Watercolours are the perfect medium for this sort of scene because, due to the fundamental unpredictability of water based pigment, they allow the capture and communication of spontaneity which creates paintings that convey more than any photograph or illustration can. The vehicles, a car and an autorickshaw, symbolize the city's gift for uniting higher and lower classes in their pursuit of the good life. The scene is predominantly inspired by Mumbai, the capital of Maharashtra. And, though autorickshaws don't ply in Mumbai they do so in its Central and Western suburbs. The inclusion of the autorickshaw in the scene, thus, also speaks to the fundamental unity between the city and its suburbs specifically, and between town and country in general. Media & Materials The painting is made with artist grade watercolours, which are lightfast. The paper is A4 size, 25% cotton, cold pressed (rough grain), acid free paper of archival quality which ensures that the painting will not degrade with age. No frame is included.

As an artist I'm interested in classical style as well as modern technique. Specifically, I'm interested in using the visual idioms of classical style, with their emphasis on accuracy, perspective, and proportionality, in the service of creating representational art that conveys more than a photograph can. While I work with pastels, pencils, and acrylics too, I am partial to watercolours. Though watercolours are considered by some to be a poorer cousin of oil paint I believe this is an unfair and inaccurate view, encouraged on one hand by the demandingess and temperamental nature of the medium and on the other hand the enviable freshness and spontaneity it can bring to a composition in the hands of a master, In addition to my pursuit of visual art projects, I write nonfiction essays, and reviews for arts and culture website
