About The Artwork

This work is for sale. Price to be calculated. This is the 13th work in an 18 piece series using fragments of paper from a document shredder, glue, ink and oil paint. Extending over two panels, the work is large and imposes itself dramatically in the hanging space. As the paintwork extends over the 4cm edges of the canvas, the artwork is intended, and ready, to hang unframed. The inspiration for the series came from the idea of how the unidentifiable fragments of ourselves resulting from identity theft protection (document shredder paper), can be reconfigured into a work that invites the viewer to see or create identity in another way. This is the largest work in the series, with thousands of fragments of paper, delicately attached and then painted in a series of processes. Close-up, one can see the detail of the textures and paintwork, and from different angles, the eye sees the movement of the composition.

I'm a Melbourne based abstract artist. I studied at the University of Cape Town (Fine Art, History of Art) and later at the Arts Students League in NYC with the political activist / artist, Rudolf Baranik. Since setting in Australia in 1997, I've exhibited in Melbourne, Sydney and South Australia. My work is housed in private collections in Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, London, New York, New Jersey, Houston and Minneapolis. I use materials as disparate as oil, plaster, collage, pastel, sand and pencil. Alternating techniques (collage, decollage, electric sanding, painting) result in a complex exchange of the revealed and the hidden. Material and experience are equally woven and unravelled to build a reframed reality.
