About The Artwork
This building was built in 1880 in Melbourne as a way to showcase how modern and forward facing the colony had become. The fountain also built in 1880 by Joseph Hochgurtd to showcase the use of concrete (just like the Atlas painting) and was the tallest fountain at that time. The building was also important because it became the site of the first meeting of the newly formed Federal government in 1901. I spent many hours in the surrounding gardens as I was growing up.
