About The Artwork

The original inspiration for this work came about because of the 2011 tsunami in Japan. I lived in Japan as a child and had many nightmares about tsunamis. When this happened in 2011 I was in Yorkshire at the time and it felt as if for the first time in my life that I was grounded, like I felt the pull of gravity towards the earth. All day I found it impossible to speak and I hid myself away in an upstairs room overlooking the dales. It was like a fear had become realised and, although I was not there I somehow bore witness to this catastrophic event. It got me thinking about people’s loss, of homes, community and landscape. On returning to my studio this painting gradually appeared over the next few months. Figures began to emerge and a horse, symbolising strength, carrying a manga style figure representing the good times. The figure on the far right wears a traditional Japanese rice hat, known as a kasha, a symbol of Buddhism representing faith. The central group of figures represents the family unit and ties all these elements together. I hope the viewers will think about the ever growing global issue of people displacement, our unity of family and the strength that we have when facing adversity. Subject matter is always interesting as it mostly chooses you. In this case it came from a childhood fear which has now become an unsettling reality.

ARTIST STATEMENT I explore the canvas with paint and sponges, dyes and brushes : looking past the obvious, discovering beauty in unfamiliar places. Immersed in the boundaries of the canvas I begin to create a world within worlds. There is no notion of beginning or end: just the story in transition that gradually unfolds in time. There are gates that open with light brush marks and delicacy: a revelation. Heavy laden sponges of paint open portals of darkness that construct patterns: a matrix. Texture shapes forms and the narrative begins…. I paint in layers like a palimpsest. The first layer is the most superficial, literal interpretation : the final image. Hiding just beneath, the symbolic or allegorical second layer : look closely and you will see.
