About The Artwork

Strange Avocado Fish is a painting of the series “Strange Plastic Fish” in which I explore the use of artificial pigments and materials such as acrylic paint in contrast to natural fabrics like cotton, linen and hemp that I myself dye with plant pigments, in this case avocado peel. The paintings in this series aim to make a subtle and ironic comment on how it has become the norm to care for the environment with small to bigger actions, but still we are drowning in plastic. The human shape fuses with this dystopian view of the urban landscape.

Catalina Gris works in technical mixta. Her images reference the urban landscape and the human shape in a well-modulated abstract substrate. To construct each work she uses fabrics that are not typical in painting – allowing her to explore different textures and paint application from transparency to impasto.
