Modern Faust meets same old problem of compromise in a new different light. He’s younger, than his prototype, or, maybe, he’s asking from evil to make him even younger. But he’s doing so not because of possible happiness he might receive. It’s time and fashion that make him do so. Success and acceptance themselves are getting younger. The value of romantic love diminishes and loses its relevance. Fear of getting old fades out, confronting new technologies – anyone can find some kind of partner via web. In the worst case, you can get an illusion of being close to someone virtually. Life is getting longer and there are much more possibilities to get joy and pleasure for the seeking mind. At the same time, new Faust feels that he’s already too old. He’s under pressure of knowledge. Sacred grimoires and rare texts are now available online. There’s no need to spend the whole life to collect them piece by piece. Enriched, though at the same time loaded by magic, modern Faust has to meet more complexed problems, than his prototype from the middle age. He’s confronting lots of questions: problem of knowing, choosing of different information sources, seeking for his own place, deciding, where to put limits of symbiosis with technology. Also, he has to decide, if there is any possible way to bargain with evil. New Faust has grown up in a culture, where magic is so available as games with dark side are. He read Gogol and Bulgakov, Bram Stoker and Lovecraft. He saw “The Devil's Advocate” and “Constantine”, “Good Omens” by Neil Gaiman and “Doctor Strange” by Marvel and so on. He’s saturated with ideas like “You have to make the good out of the bad because that is all you have to make it out of”. He has been told, that hero isn’t perfect and that the dark matter has to be used in purpose of keeping the balance. World is full with legends about kind demons and arrogant angels. Church devalues itself and therefore social meaning of holiness getting weaker, at the same the main teenage modern hero is a young sorcerer. The air itself feels the tension of new challenges, that the war of good and evil proposes to human kind in the new millennia. Unlike classical version of Faust, the new hero has to live surrounded by evil since he was a kid. There’s no need for demos to wait for a special case, while the world is innocent and full of virgin-Margarites. Au contraire, modern world is seductive and aggressive, so Faust has to find his way and be careful to stay in limits every day. Faust is ambitious, he also likes to see himself as a good person. The only way he could make a deal with the evil, is if it would make the world a better place. Thus why, evil might lose by choosing Faust as it’s target. Only emotional weakness could bring Faust to the scary finale. So the hero has to watch out, o not to make a mistake, choosing, where to sign, just as his prototype did. Though, we still hope, that God will have mercy for him, as his name “Yokanaan” means “God’s mercy”. The artwork made with mixed technique on a compressed wooden particle sheet. The artwork covered with a thin layer of transparent, non-glossy laquer, that protects the colors.
