Fanciful tales (Poltavski sotski) Painting

It was at Ukrainian parties that a special type of humorous folk tales, known as “fables,” emerged and spread, one of which is depicted in the painting. Once a guy went to the fair to buy a mare and a sakura. He bought and rides on a mare. As he was driving, the ax accidentally cut off the mare's leg. Then he took ax and cut down the willow and tied it to mare leg and went on. When he goes and the willow catches the sky. The guy climbed the willow and climbed to hell, where gold is shoveling. He climbed further and reached paradise. And in paradise the river of sour cream flows, near it trees with dumplings. Under those trees people lie, but all in white shirts, and boots are smeared with good tar, until it flows. As soon as anyone wants to eat, now his mouth will open, and dumplings made of wood and sour cream, and then just in his mouth. I say, "Can I, my brother, lie next to you?" "Well," they say, "you're still busy at home, go home!" So I went back.
