Michelle Sauve's current body of work is entitled Haughty, initially began as portraits of so-called haughty women, a haunting term found in the bible, “Moreover the LORD saith, Because the daughters of Zion are haughty, and walk with stretched forth necks and wanton eyes, walking and mincing as they go, and making a tinkling with their feet.” Exploring what it meant to be haughty led Michelle down a path of sassy, independent women presenting frank autonomous identities. Then Hillary Clinton won the popular vote yet lost the election. The election of a man who made the phrase “pussy grabber” commonplace has changed the direction of Haughty as women must now fight not only for respect and equality but also the right to exist in a hostile world.
