Feisty Beginnings - Gracey Ave Painting

I was inspired to do this body of artwork as a way to access compassion towards myself and a greater understanding of those who have been in my life. This body of work is a reflection and meditation on the impacting emotions felt during childhood through to now. Each work is a floor plan of places I have lived. The mood of each artwork varies according to my memories of living there. No experience was the same, be it joyful or dark, they are primarily without judgment. These floor plans are an abstraction taken from each home or place. I have used color as a memory to express emotion, and chosen forms relating to how I felt physically within a given space. I grew up in a small whether board house in Sydney, with my mum, three sisters and occasionally my nan, who liked too much sherry. It was filled with fiery energy, secrets, loss, sadness, and heartache yet masked with laughter and the search for a good time. We shared clothes and boyfriends, had wild parties, late nights around the table playing cards or mellow Saturday afternoons with my mum on the sofa. Time basking on the front lawn with the sprinkler on gathering freckles and fighting over whose turn it was for the sun lounge. Yet the big presence was the absence of my father who passed when I was three. The red ground of the painting reflects the fiery energy of an all-female household. The integrity of the work lies in the key values expressed through the use of primary colors, expressing the naivety I felt requiring me to grow up fast.
