Fellow Adventurers (Compagni di Avventura) Painting

Eagles, what amazing qualities do they inspire in us? They soar, they are magnificent, really. They scream alone in the heights of the sky. Once, I was laying down on my back, sky gazing and also catching my breath after a long solo hike in the forests of Slovakia's hills, where I saw a lovely eagle glide above me! That's near these hills where I currently live (but I am from the South of Italy) and where I am always surprised to find loads of deer jumping about and, now and then, I hear or if I am lucky I see a few eagles. How lucky is that! We don't get to see eagles so often in the South of Italy, although I'd love to. And therefore they are quite mythical animals for me. A bit like unicorns. I like their majesty, the freedom they inspire and the one capacity I admire most: the ability to see things from a global viewpoint which embraces a large perspective. Now let's come to the artwork. The story is amusing and surprising. Most of my early drawings and paintings on paper were made while sitting on the floor. I just loved the warmish and smooth and screeky-sounding boards of wood under me. It was a bit like sitting on creativity boat : ) So it happened that I used to place papers and cartons underneath my painting in progress, and this very one happened to be one of those. This specific paper has been used dozens of times, for about a whole year just to protect my floor. I could lie and say I determined every single brush stroke, but it's all entirely random. One day, after about a year of other artworks, I picked this one up and I was amazed at the nuances of the skylike picture which had been forming and settling in. Then I instinctively picked up some national geographic from the 70's which I had found in a dusty second hand bookshop, and looked for birds to paste into this very dramatic landscape or skyscape. So it happened that I found two eagles. At first I wasn't sure which one to choose, the one facing left or the other. Then I glued in both! Almost as if facing each other, and that was a strong moment of revelation for me. The symbolism there to meant that however high one may fly, even though the direction in my life is essential, what truly really matters is to keep in the Center. The red rectangle, once more, deriving from the paint poured over from a previous and smaller artwork I had placed onto this sheet, means home to me. Returning home, home to oneself.
