ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Throughout recent history there has been so much confusion and misinterpretation of symbology. It seems to have been stigmatised as something hidden, associated with secret orders and an overall mistrust. In my painting two such misunderstood symbols offer both hope for our future and the answers to our past. The black square, the unknowable, the fathomless void. The white sphere, the mundane egg, which, at it’s centre point is that first spark of the human soul, with the light of our hope and potential emanating from that point to create the sphere. These two simple forms, offer us to allow our imagination to draw the entire tree of life. The parallels of which we can put in context to the present situation. The fathomless void can be interpreted as that which is unknown, the future, but the soul of humanity is that which will shape this future. Always consider the centre point and the light emanating, it is this which we control, individually and as a collective human race. In this time of solitude and the fundamental shift in our lives due to lockdowns and social distancing, so many have yearned for a return to what is perceived as normal. How many of us have reflected on developing our ability to find happiness internally, for happiness derived from external materialism and stimulation can never replace that which exists within us. True happiness comes from within, to develop this as our primary source of contentment will reflect in the outer world within which we live and cohabitate. The damage we cause due to our constant desire for external stimulation, consumerism and neglect of the environmental damage this brings can all be traced back to our need to stimulate happiness externally. The true hope for our future, indeed our ability to change our ways, not only a human race, but as guardians for this sacred planet lies within each one of us. It is my sincere hope that the gentle insights which I have given to the true meaning of the symbology will inspire each viewer of this work to pause and reflect on tis and take those moments to realise the true change each of us can make within ourselves. The potential for hope, and more importantly change is within our grasp, have we used our time during this pandemic wisely to reflect and find our inner happiness? In the traditional Pythagorean symbolism we are all familiar with the triangle within the white sphere. This triangle in it’s true meaning represents male and female, the left side female, the right side male and the horizontal base is the earth. The female form I chose to replace the triangle symbolises the need for equality, of all , despite us being well in to the 21st century we still have hope for a global equality for all genders.
