About The Artwork

Aso oke Hat also known as fila in the Yoruba language, is a soft hat traditionally worn by the Yoruba people of Western Africa. It is made of hand-woven aso oke fabric, cotton, velvet, or damask. They are usually lined with cotton, but can be unlined if crafted to be worn for a single event. Filà could be hand-made or sewn from many clothing materials such as Aso-Oke, Damask, Adire, Velvet, Cotton etc., and there are different types of Filà in Yorubaland such as Abeti-aja, Gobi, Kufi and Awolowo Cap. Here are six amazing facts about Filà you probably don’t know. 1.When Filà is worn to the right, it indicates that the wearer is single. 2. Wearing the Filà to the left shows that the wearer is married. 3. When the youths tilt theirs to the front, it indicates that they will have a glorious future or that the future is theirs. 4. Elderly ones tilt theirs to the back showing that they have had their time. 5. In a situation where kings, princes or people of higher cadre in Yoruba land wear their caps to the right or left, their followers must wear theirs to the opposite side as a sign of respect. 6. A groom-to-be must wear his cap to the direction of his fiancé’s house whenever he is within the neighborhood to keep other suitors away.
