About The Artwork

Nestinarstvo Greek: αναστενάρια, anastenária) is a fire ritual originally performed in several Bulgarian- and Greek-speaking villages in the Strandzha Mountains close to the Black Sea coast in the very southeast of Bulgaria. It involves a barefoot dance on smouldering embers (жарава, zharava) performed by nestinari. It is usually performed on the square of the village in front of the whole population on the day of Sts. Constantine and Helen or the day of the village's patron saint. The ritual is a unique mixture of Eastern Orthodox beliefs and older pagan traditions from the Strandzha Mountains. In 2009, the ritual was entered in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists and the National Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage "Living Human Treasures - Bulgaria" on the application of the Regional historical museum Burgas.

I make my art for myself:) "People always make the mistake of thinking art is created for them. But really, art is a private language for sophisticates to congratulate themselves on their superiority to the rest of the world. As my artist’s statement explains, my work is utterly incomprehensible and is therefore full of deep significance". (Bill Watterson) I do enjoy working in all media but my latest favorite is digital and mixed media collage. My interest is focused on raw expression, on the interaction between color and emotion and how it is conveyed through different materials, paints, different tools’ strokes and embossing. My restless mind continually challenges me to experiment with new media, methods, materials, tools and ideas, which I find everywhere, sometimes all of a sudden and in most unexpected places. I often start my paintings without not even having a vague idea about what it will be like. Then something happens, my hands turn into mere tools, my mind proceeds to "nirvicharta", I can feel "purusha" detached from "prakriti" and here it is, my work comes out complete.
