This painting is from my series titled "IMPERFECT" the series explores a process of world-building, fleshing out an alternate universe through the creation of imagined people, products, ads, movie posters and paintings that depict certain qualities of this other world. The work takes the form of paintings, digital drawings, fake advertisements, and consumer objects. I create alternate universes and world-build as an escape from day-to-day life. This series specifically focuses on the life of a famous model and actor I have invented, named Kellsey Kane. Using this character as the subject I am taking a look at the idea of false faces and fame. For each piece in this series I select from our world the aesthetics I find most enjoyable and pull them into my imagined one. In this alternate world the logic of our timeline doesn't exist. Objects and spaces refer to things I find compelling, so in this sense some items might appear futuristic and others from the 80s. The aesthetic of this alternate world reflects my real-world experience of being bombarded with movies and advertisements, they surround me 24/7. I enjoy this aspect of the real-world with its bright, colorful, “go go go” attitude.

My work is an expression of inner desires to be seen as someone else, cooler, stronger, sexier, braver, smarter - "someone better". In our society, we are always trying to reach perfection. No matter how hard we try, we always feel a sense of lacking within ourselves. If you do not meet the standards of beauty, strength, or brains as decided by others, you feel less than. We compare ourselves to others daily, thinking "they are prettier than me", "they are braver than me". By transforming into different characters, I am able to step outside of myself and view who I am from different perspectives. The act of painting allows me to trace my features, building up my face stroke by stroke. Building myself up, both figuratively and literally. My compositions are set up as film stills or magazine advertisements in which my personas play the starring roles - separating versions of myself and honing in on one main aspect, then amplifying it into an individual. My paintings use lighting tactics found in action, sci-fi, and horror movies. Tapping into color psychology through Intensely saturated lighting and color pairings allows me to direct emotions within a person and their understanding of each scene I portray.
