Painting, Oil on Canvas
Size: 19.7 W x 27.6 H x 0.8 D in
A first impression during a sejour d'etude on the island of Maui. A land of magic, contradictions and of course, Aloha. This painting also marked the end of me being a self-taught artist as I soon was under tutelage of Mr. Semyon Bilmes, Atelier Maui.

Une histoire, vite fait Let's get real, and here are the facts. Total acceptance and non-judgement. If you think you're not up to that, read no further. Let's keep this circle filled with LIGHT. It was 2006 and I was 19 years old. I was pregnant, and afraid. I had ran away from my family home in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to France to give birth to my child a few months ago and right then, I was held down on a bed in nothing but a hospital gown, alone, in pain and waiting for my daughter to come forth on this earth. Twelve hours later, Aaliyah is born and my universe explodes - a cacophony of colours, a jungle of emotions. She is my raison-d'etre and the reason Skaii de Vega exists. I started painting in 2011 in Brussels. The artistic fire that has always been simmering within my soul, like red hot ember coals suddenly burst into fiery flames. It could have been the spirit of the city, the multicultural artistic frenzy that is Brussels, or it could have been the result of self-introspection. Whatever it was, paint, brushes and canvas were bought and The Flower of Life painting came to be. This painting reflected the beginning of my self-discovery and spiritual journey. I mainly experimented with sacred geometries and symbolic expressions inspired from the collective psychological history of humanity throughout the ages. These elements continue to be leitmotifs in my paintings. Signposts to self-acceptance and liberation. I started out with acrylics, but now exclusively use oil paint on all my works. With oil paint, I can take my time to improvise and modify any elements of a painting within an agreeable time-frame. I believe this to be necessary when painting surrealism and as being an autodidact! As an autodidact, every painting is crucial. I push my limits and practice newly discovered technical knowledge simultaneously, each time, in each painting. There are strong patterns in my work. I have certain fascinations, bordering on obsessions for certain ‘things’ in this material world. Here is a list that I can think of from the top of my head. Of course the list is non-exhaustive and will continue to grow as I continue making art. 1. The Sky 2. The All Seeing Eye 3. Sacred geometry 4. Trees of the subconscious 5. Dali’s montre molle 6. Mountains 7. The pineal gland 8. Artichokes 9. Les Petits bonhommes For example, most of my paintings depict the skies.
