About The Artwork

This painting was inspired by the memories of a Saturday morning in 1984 in South India on the way from Madras (now Chennai) to Kumbakonam, South India, in the artist Joaquin's younger years. He and his father were traveling together to visit long-time friends in Kumbakonam. Joaquin was not only looking forward to his lovely hosts, but also to a unique restaurant that served a special ice cream. The ice cream was made from a mixture of vanilla and chocolate coated in a cookie dough. When they arrived in Kumbakonam, the first thing they did was to visit this restaurant. Joaquin hadn't eaten much in the past few days due to a mild stomach infection. But he was feeling better again that day, so he was particularly hungry. After placing his order, he and his father were served the ice cream specialties they had ordered. Then the unbelievable happened. Three flies landed first - at the same time!!! - on his father's plate, paused for a few seconds. Then they took off together and again landed simultaneously on Joaquin's plate. The whole thing was hypnotic! But it went even further. Finally, they positioned themselves at a 120-degree angle to each other and took off at this angle and disappeared. Joaquin and his father looked at each other wide-eyed and then lowered their eyes to their plates again. They were both silent. Then they ate their ice cream. They didn't know exactly what happened there. And they never spoke about it again. This inspired Joaquin to paint this picture and he gave it the name: " FLIES' FLIGHT COMPETITION "

Joaquin De Mondo's art reveals a tension resulting from rational doubt, which for him follows from the inadequacies of modernism and the recognizable inapplicability of conservative views. His doubt is the origin of his striving for clear artistic statements - sometimes overly concrete, sometimes mysteriously abstract - executed with strong colours and evident dynamism in form and lines, but sometimes in a different way: in disciplined geometric compositions. Joaquin De Mondo's active and creative power and his seriousness in dealing with current issues of nature and culture lead to a variety of interesting and meaningful representations and compositions in his oeuvre, which reflect his feelings on a surprising level. His works are captivating analyses of existence and will, his contemplations, ideas and dreams. Joaquin De Mondo works conscientiously and at a remarkable standard. Interesting about his more recent works is the powerful stillness, the use of strong colours, an unusual relief-like structural technique, striking colour transitions, with an astonishing harmonic dynamic, which leads directly to the motto of his ambitions: A primal direct force that communicates itself to the viewer at first glance and holds him captive.
