Flowers in a Can was displayed in a solo exhibition titled ‘Nostalgia’, Mary Lai reflects on the current times and the delightful memories that are an escape from reality - the beat of a song that takes you back to your first loves, crafts that feel like summer camp, and the taste of your mother’s homemade soup. Mary wanted to create work that has layers of meanings. It is the paradox of a flower that brings joy but can also represent mourning or loss. It is about looking at the silver lining.
