A place out of use or in disrepair, a lost or discarded photograph, an image considered faulty, over exposed or with a decentred composition. I find there is something endearing or storytelling about them, which makes them intriguing and often quite striking, tragic, but beautiful. I work with these images, by painting over a photographic print. I try to stir up an attraction in them, a focus or certain mystery about them to regenerate an interest in these forgotten images or places. I have a compulsion to play with the images sense of time and place. Editing the image plays an important part in this as it prevents the full analysis of the photograph and is an exploration process that plays with revealing and suppressing the image. Hiding and exposing information acts as an analogy for how the photograph reveals the appearance of the past whilst limiting the full experience of it. What is held back is interesting for me, as this represents the gap between the image and lived experience.
