About The Artwork

www.matthieuvanriel.nl I painted this work after a walk in the woods nearby Chaam (Netherlands) at dusk. Inspiration for my work comes from many walks along flowerfields (tulips), in heathlands, polders and woods in The Netherlands and rugged mountainous regions in Scandinavia and the Alps. The paintings have a great clarity of colour and focus on landscape features, such as the flatness of the Dutch scenery. Some paintings are almost abstract, such as the Boundary series, started in 1998. This shows a figurative language bordering on geometry, using a minimal amount of paint. These paintings are a formal approach to landscape, to paint the essence of landscape, the grandeur of nature, to be aware of light, spatiality, silence, immateriality and emptiness in landscape. I am constantly reducing and simplifying elements of the landscape, making them more schematic and conceptual, as well as much flatter. Painted with professional top-quality Rembrandt oilpaint, Winsor and Newton Artists Oil colour and Old Holland Scheveningen Old Masters oilpaint. Painted on high quality canvas. The painting will be shipped rolled up in a sturdy cardboard tube, without a stretcher frame. Shipping is therefore much cheaper! But if you would like to have the painting with stretcherframe sent to you (additional costs), please contact Saatchi Art! Education: Academy of Arts Sint Joost Breda The Netherlands. Diploma of Higher Education 1987. I graduated cum laude. Museums: I exhibited in the Stedelijk Museum Breda Netherlands (2018 and 2019) and the Jan Cunen Museum Oss Netherlands. Grants: 1991 1994 1995 1996 1998 1999 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 www.matthieuvanriel.nl

www.matthieuvanriel.nl Inspiration for my work comes from many walks along flowerfields (tulips), in heathlands, polders and woods in The Netherlands and rugged majestic mountainous regions like Jotunheimen en Rondane in Norway, the Alps and the Dolomites in Italy. The paintings are precisely translations of feelings, observations and experiences during the walks: the grandeur of nature, immateriality, emptiness, colours or spatiality, colors of flowers/trees/nature, mist, reflections of light in water, the wind, waves, the light (morning, day, evening), atmospheric light, the temperature (cold and warmth), ice and glaciers. I try to find the right balance between abstraction and figuration. Education: Academy of Arts Sint Joost Breda The Netherlands. Diploma of Higher Education 1987. I graduated cum laude.
