About The Artwork

My creative pseudonym is Evgeniya Bova. I am an artist from Russia. My project is dedicated to women artists of the past who have achieved success. This work is from the series, which show copies of the hands from the self-portraits of female artists. First of all I am interested in the view of the artists themselves and not in the view of their contemporaries, critics and historians. Therefore, my project is based on self-portraits of artists - their reflection of themselves in their work. By exploring the work of these women, their contribution to art, by remembering them, it is as if I am creating a new connection between us. I accept their experience expressed through pictures. I have based my paintings not on canvas or paper but on ancient plates. Some of the plates were handed down to me from my ancestors, some I bought at flea markets. When I look at them I imagine the hands of generations of women washing them. The plate in this project is a symbol of the "female" in art. As with any work associated with arts and crafts, the painting of ceramics is generally regarded with disdain. Women's painting has long been treated with the same disdain, seen solely as decorative, fun, a distraction from "real" women's affairs. By putting an image of the hands of artists who have achieved recognition, success, and a place in the history of art on the surface of a plate, I change their purpose from utilitarian to aesthetic. I transform the everyday object into an art object, the frivolous into the attention-grabbing, the empty into the meaningful. Just as female artists, achieving personal success, turned "feminine" art into art that is recognized and valued. ________________________________________________ Art work took part in exhibitions: 2021 - group exhibition "Visibility", Sevkabel Port, St. Petersburg. 2021 - group exhibition "Invisible Women", Fund for Cultural Projects "Thursday", Moscow. ________________________________________________ The Plate manufactured presumably at the Kuznetsov factory in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The plates are not intended to be used as tableware! The plates are decorative panels. A dry soft cloth can be used for care. ________________________________________________ • 100% original oil painting • Oil painting on antique plate • Hanging hardware is included • Will be shipped in cardboard box • Includes Certificate of Authenticity • Year of creation: 2021 ________________________________________________ Elizabeth Nourse (October 26, 1859 – October 8, 1938) was a realist-style genre, portrait, and landscape painter born in Mt. Healthy, Ohio, in the Cincinnati area. She also worked in decorative painting and sculpture. Described by her contemporaries as "the first woman painter of America" and "the dean of American woman painters in France and one of the most eminent contemporary artists of her sex," Nourse was the first American woman to be voted into the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts. She also had the honor of having one of her paintings purchased by the French government and included in the Luxembourg Museum's permanent collection. Nourse's style was described by Los Angeles critic Henry J. Seldis as a "forerunner of social realist painting." Some of Nourse's works are displayed at the Cincinnati Art Museum. She was one of the "New Women" of the 19th century successful, highly trained women artists who never married, like Ellen Day Hale, Mary Cassatt, Elizabeth Coffin and Cecilia Beaux. Hale, Nourse, and Coffin "created compelling self-portraits in which they fearlessly presented themselves as individuals willing to flout social codes and challenge accepted ideas regarding women's place in society. Indeed, the New Women portraits of the 1880s and 1890s are unforgettable interpretations of energetic, self-confident and accomplished women." From Wikipedia.

My creative pseudonym is Evgeniia Bova. My love for painting and successful studies at art school has determined the creative direction of my life. I found professional fulfillment in the fields of photography and graphic design. However, I fully realized all my knowledge and potential in painting, which I devoted myself to since 2015. I am active professionally, my paintings are in private collections in Russia, USA, UK, Canada, Australia, and France, as well as in the collection of the magazine "Russian Gallery XXI century" and the collection of paintings of the Nonprofit Foundation for the promotion of national culture and art. Since 2019, I participate in group exhibitions in Moscow, St. Petersburg, as well as international online exhibitions. The basis of my practice - is the most subtle transfer of the emotional state in a particular moment. When creating abstract images I use minimalistic color solutions, relying on texture. Sometimes the paintings are almost sculptural, and the complexity of their relief is inversely proportional to the complexity of the color solution. The state is conveyed by the expressiveness of the gesture, not the subject matter. When I work on a painting I use not only brushes and brushstrokes, but also my fingers. That's what allows me to convey nuances of emotions on a tactile level, making each work intimate and sensual.
