About The Artwork

My creative pseudonym is Evgeniya Bova. I am an artist from Russia. My project is dedicated to women artists of the past who have achieved success. This work is from the series, which show copies of the hands from the self-portraits of female artists. First of all I am interested in the view of the artists themselves and not in the view of their contemporaries, critics and historians. Therefore, my project is based on self-portraits of artists - their reflection of themselves in their work. By exploring the work of these women, their contribution to art, by remembering them, it is as if I am creating a new connection between us. I accept their experience expressed through pictures. I have based my paintings not on canvas or paper but on ancient plates. Some of the plates were handed down to me from my ancestors, some I bought at flea markets. When I look at them I imagine the hands of generations of women washing them. The plate in this project is a symbol of the "female" in art. As with any work associated with arts and crafts, the painting of ceramics is generally regarded with disdain. Women's painting has long been treated with the same disdain, seen solely as decorative, fun, a distraction from "real" women's affairs. By putting an image of the hands of artists who have achieved recognition, success, and a place in the history of art on the surface of a plate, I change their purpose from utilitarian to aesthetic. I transform the everyday object into an art object, the frivolous into the attention-grabbing, the empty into the meaningful. She was born in Lyon on 6 September 1761. Marie-Gabrielle came from a modest background and her previous background and artistic training is unknown, but in 1781 she became the pupil of the French painter Adelaide Labille-Guiard in Paris. She excelled as a portrait painter, and her works include oil paintings, watercolours and miniatures. Marie-Gabrielle Capet was born in Lyon in 1761. In her youth, Capet attended a public drawing school located in her town. In eighteenth-century France, the Royal Academy of Art was responsible for training artists and exhibiting artworks at the Salon that glorified heroic values promoted by the Bourbon monarchy. Until the French Revolution, the Royal Academy of Art in Paris was the central institution for official artistic practice, and limited its number of female students to four at a time. In 1781, twenty-year-old Capet moved to Paris to become the student of Adélaïde Labille-Guiard (1749–1803), a Neoclassical artist who was admitted to the Academy in 1783. Capet showed her early work at the Exposition de la jeunesse, and later exhibited at the Salon when it was opened to all artists after the French Revolution. Her body of work included miniature paintings, oil paintings, and pastels, which were praised for their virtuoso draftsmanship and use of colour. Many of her pastel paintings were portraits, though by 1808 she was regarded as a history painter in her own right. She counted among other customers several members of the royal family, and other members of Paris society, such as the lawyer Pierre-Nicolas Berryer and the playwright Joseph Chénier. The work of Marie-Gabrielle Capet contains a large collection of miniature portraits, the majority of which are housed in The Louvre. Included in this collection are portraits of Madame Martin de Lesseps, Madame Elisabeth, sister of Louis XVI, and Mademoiselle Mars. From Wikipedia.

I found professional fulfillment in the fields of photography and graphic design. However, I fully realized all my knowledge and potential in painting, which I devoted myself to since 2015. I am active professionally, my paintings are in private collections in Russia, USA, UK, Canada, Australia, and France, as well as in the collection of the magazine "Russian Gallery XXI century" and the collection of paintings of the Nonprofit Foundation for the promotion of national culture and art. Since 2019, I participate in group exhibitions in Moscow, St. Petersburg, as well as international online exhibitions. The basis of my practice - is the most subtle transfer of the emotional state in a particular moment. When creating abstract images I use minimalistic color solutions, relying on texture. Sometimes the paintings are almost sculptural, and the complexity of their relief is inversely proportional to the complexity of the color solution. The state is conveyed by the expressiveness of the gesture, not the subject matter. When I work on a painting I use not only brushes and brushstrokes, but also my fingers. That's what allows me to convey nuances of emotions on a tactile level, making each work intimate and sensual.
