After studying the Hudson River Painters as a member of the Hudson River Fellowship, I decided to team up with geologist Stuart Parker and study the landscape I grew up in back in the south. I followed the 'Tweetsie Trail' railroad track from Tennessee through the Blue Ridge Mountains to Asheville, painting along the way. This is a scene of the French Broad River, which runs through the Blue Ridge railroad town of Marshall, N.C. The placement and bending of the trees and the white factory building shows the encroaching threat of erosion. Erosion is taking a toll on both the natural and economic landscape of this region. In the background, the old railroad line of the past disappears behind the trees. The future, like the river, encroaches on the old warehouse as Marshall begins to change from a working class town into a tourist destination.
