One of the greatest Chinese philosophers, Confucius said, “ Study the past if you would define the future.” From this perspective, I realized that throughout history and even to present day, we have only progressed as a civilization because we reflected and depended on the lessons from the past. The painting From Old Circumstances follows this concept. It brings the idea that as humans we are constantly progressing through time in our technology and in our advancements. However, as a society, we are always brought together by the lessons and morals of history. History to many is simply a series of events in the past. However to my eyes, it is an story that has no end- a story that brings to life the morals and consequences of human actions- a story that animates human nature a story that provides an infinite connection between our progeny and our ancestors. From Old Circumstances epitomizes the role the past, present, and future plays in both our individual lives as well as the legacy of a society. While we may anticipate for a better future, we can rely on a story of the past. After all, human progression is possible through an endless communication between the past and the present and beyond.
