Spring and summer are so nice with trees filled with leaves. At the beginning of September I found some time to kayak on the Chestatee River I’ve made so many paintings about. I made a few life observations from the experience. This particular river is a slow moving one. There are very light rapids fairly often but the flat, still areas are also fairly constant. It takes twice as long to reach the take out location if simply relaxing and not paddling through the still areas. For a few moments it’s perfect just for a little break for the arms. I personally enjoy having some momentum most of the time. At the end of the adventure I realized that water that stays in motion also stays fresher. Life seems to be more vibrant and fresh as well when we stay in motion. I think about the ad I saw that says a body in motion stays in motion talking about our physical well being. To iterate it in reverse, like a river that doesn’t stay in motion stagnates, so does life. From the middle of the river that day I took photos. This painting references the view during a placid moment. Too much stillness as well as too much motion gets most of nature off balance including us humans.

STATEMENT Beginning with a certain amount of chaos and energy to activate the canvas a dialog is initiated. This dialog includes both language/writing and intuitive marks through the use of various drawing media/tools. Then splashes of paint and gentle washes of color are added. It is my intention to bring order, balance and calm to the surface by using multiple layers of pigment. The original “chaotic” gestures can be seen peeking through; just enough to create interest and mystery. BIO Internationally collected Atlanta based artist, Juanita Bellavance, uses her mastery of color and technique to create nature-inspired paintings that provide solace from life’s strife and turmoils. Her art is informed by her study of music and her connection to spirit. Juanita is largely self-taught and is inspired by masters such as Diebenkorn, J.M.W. Turner, Giorgio Morandi, William Thon and others.
