Gaze, 30x40cm Oil on canvas. 2022 I photographed a group of older men sitting in a piazza in San Lorenzo de El Escorial, Spain. They were chatting and people-watching. I combined my interpretation of my photograph with my interpretation of Henri de Toulouse Lautrec’s Le Sofa, 1896, Oil on board Lautrec set out to document the lives of prostitutes in a series of paintings. These were private moments. This painting is hangs in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In their transcript, they describe Lautrec’s depiction not as voyeuristic but more empathetic and compassionate. Gabrielle is in the foreground and most visible in my work. My work relies more on impasto and thick mark making to lay the foundation of this double scene. The figures overlap and push back and forth. Gabrielle comes forward some time but she is frequently overtaken by the visual weight of the men in the scene. 30x40cm Oil on canvas.
