About The Artwork
I paint sunflowers at times of upheaval; they are a conduit and a wonderful way of dealing with emotions. Vincent Van Gogh painted them to decorate the house he hoped to share with Gauguin in Arles. I lived in Southern France for 10 years and grew all manner of weird and wonderful sunflowers so that I could paint them. I always need a sunflower painting in my house. Having moved to London I don’t grow sunflowers anymore but I still paint them from sketches and from memory when i need to. I like their gnarled and spiky forms and I love their spirit; they just keep turning toward the sun. This one was done as an escape in the studio downstairs during the stay of a particulalrly awful house guest. Painted on the wrong side of thin panel board.

Laura Hudson is a cross-disciplinary artist, writer and curator with a drawing/painting practice that is informed by her background in experimental film and digital media. Hudson worked as a project manager/curator specialising in avant-garde film and new technologies before returning to her own practice full-time in 2016. Since then she has been included in; the Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize, 2019, 2018, RA Summer Exhibition 2018, 2017, 2016, Beep Painting Prize Exhibition, 2018, Sketch Open, 2017, RWA Drawn 2017, and the National Original Print Exhibition 2016. She won the student prize for her nail house drawings at Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize, 2018, The Roger de Grey Drawing Prize 2018, the RWS Contemporary Watercolour Patrons Prize 2018 and was purchased for The Ruth Borchard Self-Portrait Contemporary Collection in 2017.
