Glory (Self Portrait) Painting

With my self-portrait, I allowed myself to explore an alternate worldline depicting myself in neo-classical settings. What if not all the famous “old masters” of the Western world were male and European? Is the question that helped me shape this painting. Women were frowned upon if they were artists, as it wasn’t a common practice for women. Moreover, it was unconventional to depict teeth in classical paintings. The woman’s lips always had to be closed. Élisabeth Le Brun’s c.1782 self-portrait was the first exception to the rule, as she painted her mouth open. The controversial “mouth open” became a trend and trademark of hers. My own personal trademark is replacing 18th century objects with 21st century technology. The horses are replaced with Tesla cars, and the book replaced by my open phone case. The wallpaper is also a motif within my whole series.
