About The Artwork

The woman in this painting in a way represents me. Who I feel like when I surrender all to God & who I aspire to be. For years I envisioned painting her. My first visions were of her with broken shackles around her wrists & a Light coming from above representing God. However, when I finally came around to painting her, I painted a cropped image so to speak of what I originally had in mind. This isn't as detailed as I'm used to & has a few paired "flaws" if it were only realism, but the more I think of those "imperfections", the more I love it. They only add to the sense of letting go. The sense of freedom I get from it. Freedom. Awe. Surrender. Strength. Being washed clean. Purity. Even in the darkness of "night", the darkness of life, God can be found. God is in the rain (as Evie in V for Vendetta states though I envisioned this painting long before I ever watched that movie). I think that about sums it up. :) Oil painting done at "Masterpiece in a Day" in Fountain Square in Indianapolis. First one done as a married woman & first painting in my Women in Freedom Collection. I hadn't quite determined my signature at this point & since I only did it in 4 hours, my signature isn't the same as my newer paintings as the paint was still wet (probably not the smartest idea doing an oil painting in one day ;)...), but I had envisioned this painting for YEARS & thought it was a great opportunity to make me finally do it. After it was dry, I signed the back with my normal signature & dated it...no worries. ;) The sides are unpainted & are stapled. It could easily be covered with a frame if that bothers you.

During some really difficult seasons and stages in my life, I started having visions of me being free that really gave me the desire to do whatever it would take to power through and fight for my freedom in those areas. I started a “Stages of Freedom” Collection as a result. In late 2007, I was at one of the lowest points in my life and found myself in an emergency room after downing enough aspirin to end my life prematurely. After being there for about 10 hours, my toxicity levels finally reached their peak and started going down. A dr. came in trying to shame me for my choice and asked if I felt stupid for what I had done while I sat there staring at the blank white walls and feeling utterly hopeless. At the time, I only wished I had thought of a better, more immediate plan of action. However, as I looked at the blank white walls, all I could picture was the girl in the rain painting I had painted only months before and realized this collection is meant to be bigger than myself and help others as well. It’s still not entirely complete, but I have every intention of proposing to put it in various places where people need hope and healing and wish for my art to help be a part of that process. I hope you will enjoy it as well as you take a look at it.
