About The Artwork
This painting started as a barn owl. If you look closely, you can see one of the eyes of the owl beneath the gill. When I'm dissatisfied with a painting, I play and explore until I find something new. When I turned this painting sideways and made new marks, I saw the body of a goldfish. From there, using images of goldfish, I pulled this beauty out of its surroundings and found what I believe is the perfect symbiosis of subject and environment. I want my work to evoke this sense of merging with nature, its oneness, and its power of belonging.

My art process is one of exploration and intuition. Using line, color, and shape, I play until something appears that captures my interest. I develop this emergent image in relationship to the background. If the dance is successful, the image stays. If not, exploration resumes. Sometimes I will "impose" an image on an abstract underpainting, but again, the image only stays if it integrates successfully with its surroundings. The relationship between image and background is very important to me. It helps me explore the ideas of being seen, worth, belonging, and individuality. Color helps me express this vibrant interaction while revealing the beauty of it all.
