Gorgeous George Painting

GW was GQ! Gorgeous George Washington. Biographies and notes from his contemporaries say so. Abigail Adams said: "No finer cut of man walks the earth!" Huh? If you page through your history books or visit his presidential portraits in galleries, he looks so formal and so.... NOT alive. But according to historical records and first-hand accounts, everyone looked up when he walked in the room. Where is this virile GW? I decided to paint that man, the 6'4" strapping adventurer, horseman, and soldier. And did I mention that he was no slouch on the dance floor? I chose the iconic pose of Michelangelo's "David" to pose my figure. George Washington, like David, was a figure of manly perfection and bravery in his time. I used raw linen, oil paint, and red linen thread to quilt the stars and bars through the body of the figure to foreshadow his role as a Founding Father. "GW was GQ" reshapes the imagery of Washington to reveal a forgotten, but essential quality of this leader. Before he was a great general and a great statesman, people could not take their eyes off him.
