About The Artwork

My brother-in-law asked for a painting of his favorite view in Grand Teton National Park, near the place where his daughter had her graduation pictures taken. So I saddled up the Jeep and braved the crowds and the August heat for a visit to the Yellowstone-Teton corridor. The summer of 2018 was marred by drought and forest fires throughout the Western U.S. and smoke obliterated the mountains the day I arrived. The next morning was clear and I grabbed this view. I set one of the "Mormon Row" barns in the middle ground to add color and interest to the composition and made reference photos and a 4x6 color sketch at the scene. The blue wheatgrass in the foreground waved in the morning breeze and added another palate of colors. I used Daniel Smith quinaquidrone, duotone, iridescent, and genuine colors to capture the natural glow that seemed to radiate from the scene. There wasn't much snow left that year and more was needed to make the mountains glisten so I went back in time by cross-referencing images of prior years' snowfalls from the Internet. Yes, the mountains looked pink to me so that's how I rendered them. I used one of my favorite colors, iridescent electric blue, to make the glacier shadows pop out. The instigator of the project has the original, but prints are available if this is one of your favorite views, as it is one of mine.

I'm a retired communication professor pursuing a new avocation as a watercolor artist. In my travels across the United States and around the world I pause for a 4x6 color sketch whenever an inspirational moment takes hold and I have my portable art pack at hand. I revisit those moments at my home in western Colorado by producing finished miniatures with reference to digital snapshots I capture on location. I have been at this for over 25 years and have a collection of several hundred paintings of great works of nature and of humankind. The most striking images evolve into larger works that fill the walls of my studio, our home, and our outbuildings. I show my work in art exhibitions near my home and now online.
